Chapter 1: The Lonely City
Jerusalem’s Pain and Loss
Imagine a city that was once full of people, now as lonely as someone who has lost all their friends. This is Jerusalem, feeling sad and deserted like a widow. The city, which was once great among nations and a queen among provinces, has now become a slave. She weeps bitterly in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks. There’s no one to comfort her; all her friends have betrayed her and become her enemies.
Jerusalem’s Hardships and Suffering
Jerusalem remembers all the precious things she had in the days of old. When her people fell into the enemy’s hands, there was no one to help her. The enemies saw her and laughed at her downfall. Jerusalem has sinned greatly, so she has been tossed away like a filthy rag. She has no comforter, and she sees that the Lord is right for sending her this pain, because she has rebelled against His commands. Listen, everyone, and see her sorrow. Even her priests groan and her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness.
Chapter 2: God’s Anger
The Lord’s Fierce Anger
God has covered the daughter of Zion with His anger. He has thrown down the splendor of Israel from heaven to earth. He has not remembered His footstool in the day of His anger. The Lord has swallowed up without mercy all the habitations of Jacob; He has thrown down in His wrath the strongholds of the daughter of Judah. He has brought them down to the ground; He has polluted the kingdom and its princes.
A Community in Distress
In His wrath, God has cut off every horn of Israel and withdrawn His right hand at the approach of the enemy. He has burned like a flaming fire in Jacob, consuming all around. He has bent His bow like an enemy, with His right hand set like a foe; and He killed all who were pleasant to the eye. On the tent of the daughter of Zion, He poured out His fury like fire. The Lord has become like an enemy; He has swallowed up Israel and swallowed up all her palaces, destroying her strongholds and multiplying mourning and lamentation.
Chapter 3: A Cry of Despair
Hope in the Midst of Suffering
I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of His wrath. He has led me and made me walk in darkness and not in light. Surely against me He has turned His hand again and again the whole day. My flesh and my skin He has made old; He has broken my bones. He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship. He has set me in dark places like those long dead.
A Call for Hope and Renewal
But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, says my soul, therefore I will hope in Him. The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.
Chapter 4: The Siege of Jerusalem
The Horror of the Siege
How the gold has dimmed, the pure gold changed! The holy stones are scattered at the head of every street. The precious sons of Zion, once worth their weight in fine gold, how they are regarded as earthen pots, the work of a potter’s hands! Even jackals offer the breast and nurse their young, but the daughter of my people has become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness. The tongue of the nursing infant sticks to the roof of its mouth for thirst; children beg for bread, but no one gives to them.
The Punishment of Zion
The punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom, which was overthrown in a moment, and no hands were wrung for her. Her prophets are reckless, faithless persons; her priests have profaned what is sacred, they have done violence to the law. The Lord’s anointed, the breath of our nostrils, was captured in their pits, of whom we said, ‘Under his shadow we shall live among the nations.’
Chapter 5: A Prayer for Restoration
Remembering the Past
Remember, O Lord, what has befallen us; look, and see our disgrace! Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our homes to foreigners. We have become orphans, fatherless; our mothers are like widows. We must pay for the water we drink; the wood we get must be bought. Our pursuers are at our necks; we are weary; we are given no rest.
A Plea for Mercy
Restore us to yourself, O Lord, that we may be restored! Renew our days as of old—unless you have utterly rejected us, and are exceedingly angry with us. We are deeply wounded and long for the time when we were in favor with You. Our hearts ache as we think of those days; now we are lost, and we don’t know what to do. Please look down from heaven and see how we suffer. Our dances have turned into mourning, and our songs into sighs.
A Cry for Help
Help us, O Lord, for we have nothing left and no one to turn to but You. The elders have left the city gates, the young have forgotten their music, and our hearts have lost the joy we once had. Our crown has fallen; woe to us, for we have sinned! Because of this our heart is faint; because of these things our eyes grow dim. Bring us back to You, Lord. Let us come back. Renew our days as before, unless You have completely abandoned us in your anger. We cry out for your mercy and your great love to bring us back and rebuild what has been broken.
